One of many dye days to come..........

This is one of many dye days to come - I'm feeling pushed to get 80 pounds of roving dyed before it gets too cool and rainy out. I work under cover but when I'm rinsing rovings I'm out in the open.........not to mention that if there's no sunshine it could take a week for roving to dry as opposed to drying by the end of the dye day, the last to come out of the steamer dry by morning. I thought it was going to be an easy dye day - just two special orders of roving and a small partial box of silk hankies (for spinning).......I underestimated those hankies, I guess it does take more than an hour or two to dye 100 hankies! Today is another dye day - it's only 41 and foggy out right now so I'll probably wait to start after 9am. I'll be dyeing Polwarth today and probably for another 2 days next week.....decided I need to split it into 3 dye days instead of 2, standing on that concrete for hours is a killer, need to make shorter than 8 hour days of it.

Frightening news this morning when I turned on the news - gas explosion in San Bruno, CA - fire is so scary. And this on top of the horrible fast moving wild fire in Colorado. My heart goes out to all involved, my wishes for all firefighters to be safe..........

Great finds.........

Today was spinning day - we did our annual spinning in the park - what great fun. We sat in the huge gazebo since there was a chance of light rain. What a fun day. Following spinning I decided to check out a few local antique shops for more finds for the beach cottage. Well, I came away with a couple little book shelves that were just what I was looking for. The one with the v-shape bottom is a style I've been searching for - and it was only $10!

Thought I'd also show the great spinning wheel lamp I scored at the same shop a few weeks ago - that won't be going to live on the coast, undecided what room it will reside in here....hmm, guess I better get that shop dust off of it and find it a home!

Back from the cottage by the Sea......

We took off for the coast again Friday afternoon and returned this evening (Monday). We spent a relaxing, sunny, blue sky (no smoke!) weekend at the beach cottage. No work on the house this time - all play. It's amazing how once over there we totally forget about everything that needs to be done here at home.

Below is a picture of one of the two hydrangeas in the corner of the yard....the only good things in the yard - it's a mass of dandelions, or many dying dandelions since I sprayed them, looks pretty bad but revamping the yard will have to wait until next spring....too many other things to be done this year....and it will be a slow drawn-out process.

These are some variety of lilies found in different spots around the edge of the fence. Hopefully I'll be able to salvage them in the spring because they definitely need dividing as you can see from the mass of bulbs in the second picture - they're all above ground! I can't believe that's how they should be growing. I'm thinking they really need to be planted in the ground. If anyone knows better please let me know before spring.

And this is my favorite treasure of the weekend. An antique bird's eye maple table to put on my side of the bed at the cottage. We had already picked up a similar table in oak for Sam's side. Isn't this beautiful! We also scored a little painted table (sage green & white) for next to the couch and 2 old knick-knack shelves that I'll be painting white to hang in each bathroom. It's very fun to scour antique shops and garage sales for great finds for the cottage. Many pieces will eventually be painted and distressed for more of a vintage cottage feeling but certainly not this table - it's way too beautiful to paint!

On the fire front - we were glad to leave all the smoke behind on Friday - we came back to the news that the fire is now 95% contained and firefighter's from outside the region will start pulling out tomorrow leaving just the local ODF fire folks here to keep working the fire and making sure it doesn't escape containment lines. I sure will be glad when the fall rains start and fire season is over. They've all done a great job!

And on the fiber front I need to spend time dyeing but not tomorrow - it's spinning day tomorrow! 

Yummy feeling.......

This is one of the two scarves that just came off the loom and were washed. The light grey/multi-color in the warp is my handspun from a mystery batt, not sure what's in it other than definitely a soft wool and silk. The black in the warp and weft is commercial alpaca. Yummy feeling - so soft! Too bad pictures can't convey yummy.

Clouds........

I just couldn't resist running back outside to take pictures of the clouds. I've never seen clouds like this out here - so wispy and delicate looking. They make me think of what fine silk top looks like it it's pulled into wispy pieces......always have fiber on the brain........and then there's the rising smoke plumes to the west

Morning Surf Scarf finished......

I did finish knitting the Morning Surf Scarf (pattern in Spin-Off Summer 2008) yesterday afternoon out of my handspun in my Harvest colorway. This past winter I made a pair of convertible mitts out of the same handspun so now I have a scarf to go with. I love the way it turned out, was a bit worried before blocking when it looked like a mass of curled up threads. Very fun pattern to knit, easy to memorize for mindless knitting.

The tablecloth the scarf is sitting was crocheted by my Great Aunt Angela, an old Italian who put curses on people she didn't like. It's an absolutely beautiful tablecloth that fits my oval oak table, not a stain on it....not sure it was ever used by anyone until me, it was always in my grandmother's cedar chest.

Scarves in the works........

Ok, so here's the first scarf on the warp using my handspun and commercial alpaca. I'm finding it very boring weaving, just a simple broken twill. Maybe it's really not boring weaving but just my mood for the day. I'm thinking that swing on the porch and my knitting are looking better and better all the time........there's always tomorrow........

Scarves to be..........

It's the end of August and what have I accomplished this month.......not too much. I have this bad habit of asking myself that question at the end of the month, end of the quarter, halfway through the year and then at the end of the year.....am thinking maybe I'm too hard on myself to produce.

I should be dyeing roving, weather has actually cooled and overcast, not good roving drying weather, not to mention I'm just not in the mood to schlep and set up for dyeing this week. So today I'll wind a warp for 2 scarves using the handspun mystery fiber above (it must have merino and silk in it) and some black commercial alpaca. I don't often weave scarves in wool but have been looking at my handspun stash and decided some of the small bits should be utilized. This handspun was spindle spun.

We spent the weekend on the coast, absolutely beautiful sunny weather, upper 60's. It was cooler here in the valley too which held the fire at bay. Temps are coming back up again though so they'll start doing more back burning on the north side of the fire this week. It's still listed as high for growth potential - just turns my stomach since it's due west of us, not close enough for immediate danger but close enough to possibly be a danger if it blows up with the heat returning. The incident command center and firefighter's tent city (900+) moved up here just 3 1/2 miles from the house since the north side is where all the activity is now.....roads are brimming full of firefighters and equipment. 7:20 this morning 2 small copters went buzzing over quickly, not sure what that was about, not the bucket toting copters.

Finally off the loom........

Finally I got these scarves off the loom yesterday and washed - they're rayon chenille, sure wish pictures could convey how yummy they feel. I am so not getting enough time weaving - other things in life keep getting in the way - makes for a grumpy me.

I weighed out 20 pounds of Polwarth roving to dye next week, Polwarth is a merino/lincoln cross. I've only spun a sample so far and really like it - can't wait to see how it takes the dye. Hiding under the 20 lbs of Polwarth, 20 lbs of BFL/Tussah and 20 lbs of Panda (merino/bamboo/nylon) I found another 10 lb bag of merino/tencel -yikes!  I better get busy dyeing......which cuts into the weaving time......

Fire news - haven't been able to get any good info this morning but Wednesday's triple digit weather and winds let the fire make a run to the north - last I heard more bombers, copters and firefighters were called in. Latest update I saw shows some structures in danger now as well as campgrounds - don't like it moving in this direction. Devastating, frightening, quick fire in Ashland Tuesday afternoon - within a couple of hours 11 houses consumed, others damaged, human caused along the freeway, jumped freeway into a golf course neighborhood. Couple of small fires yesterday in my area but both put out quickly. Temps have come down into the 70's, sure wish we'd see some rain. My chest is heavy with worry over fires each summer.....it takes it's toll.......

Sock knitting..........

Ok, so I don't have much new to post so thought I'd post the latest socks on the needles, Zauberball Crazy Yarn. I always have to have something mindless on the needles to take with me here and there to knit on.

Waves scarf (Aug 19th post) is still on the needles......actually it came off the needles when I realized I wouldn't have enough of that handspun and since I wanted it a bit narrower anyhow I pulled it out and started over. Not totally mindless knitting but pretty close to it.

On the fire front - smoke is horrendous today but it's not a bad thing...... at least I don't think so! The word this morning is that there would be lots of smoke today due to back burning. And believe me there's lots of smoke and it's enveloping my house as I type. It's still unsettling to have all this smoke and not know for sure if it's the planned back burning or something new. Since I've only heard one copter go over and it wasn't carrying a bucket (large two rotor copter.....are those rotors, or are they called blades?) I figure it's ok. They're doing a great job on this fire. Over the weekend they needed to start more back burning but in areas with 80% grades, it is too dangerous to drop firefighters in. Instead they went up in copters with little balls, similar to ping pong balls, filled with chemicals that lit fires as they hit the ground. Fire is now 55% contained and they hope to have it fully contained by the end of the month. The triple digit temps today and tomorrow don't help but they're supposed to fall 20-25 degrees by the weekend.

County fair recovery

I feel like a truck has hit me after spinning at the county fair for the past five days. We all had such a good time visiting with the public and with each other at the fair but I'm sure glad not to be sitting on one of those metal folding chairs anymore! Today is recovery day getting weekend fiber orders ready to ship and possibly taking pictures of new handwoven scarves to list in the etsy shop. I desperately need to work in the flower beds but the back won't allow it after the week at the fair........there's always tomorrow.

The forest fire keeps growing but it's really very controlled....well, the occasional blow-up occurs but it's been happening within the lines being formed. All the fire fighters are doing a great job with containment lines and controlled back burning. Of course with that back burning comes more smoke and yesterday morning my windshield was covered with ash.....although hard to tell from all the dirt and dust from the fair parking lot. So far this morning it's clear over our house, maybe the wind is blowing the other direction.

No pictures today but two announcements to make that may be of interest to those here in Southern Oregon/Northern California.

Spinning at the fair......

This is what I'm currently spinning while at the county fair. It's an Ashland Bay merino/tussah blend in the Lilac colorway. I'm spinning with the thought that I'll pair it with my last handspun of merino/tussah in the concord colorway in possibly shadow weave for a shawl or yardage for a vest or such, all depends on how many yards I end up with. This was all I had spun after 2 days of spinning......next time I think I'll spin worsted size to fill bobbins faster!

On the fire front - fire is still growing although slowly, expected containment is not expected until October 15th! It's 15% contained at this point. There were dry thunderstorms a couple nights ago which ignited over 30 small fires, mostly to the east of us, from the sounds of it they've got them under control but getting good information is tough. Check out fellow fiber friend Karen's site for a couple pix of the copters at work yesterday morning.

Currently on the needles

This is what I just started knitting - the Morning Surf Scarf, I found the pattern in the Summer 2008 issue of Spin-Off magazine. I'm using some of my leftover hand-dyed handspun Falkland in the Harvest colorway. I'm really liking it, will be interesting to see it blocked when I'm done. Hopefully I have enough yarn to make a decent length scarf, I should but who knows.........

Off to the fair to spin again today, will try to get a picture of what I'm currently spinning to post.

County fair display

Here's a picture of our display at the county fair, the theme is our garden party fibers. The fleeces in front will be judged tomorrow morning. It looks a little empty but imagine 10+ spinners sitting in front of this display.

The forest fire is still raging just a bit southwest of us with only 5% containment, steep terrain is hampering fire fighting. Right now it's the biggest fire in the country so resources are available, I hope more equipment and firefighters are on the way.  I'm on edge after living through the Biscuit Fire so my days are filled with stress. If it blows up like that fire did we could be right in it's path. And to top this off as I type there is thunder and lightening, and in this area of the country that comes without rain so more fires are sure to start, already one reported to the east.

I love living in the northwest but I have to admit the summers are not my favorite season. I love having no humidity like the MD/DC area I lived most of my life but with no humidity comes no rain for months and impending forest fires......and I could do without the 100 degree heat! Starting tomorrow temps are supposed to come down to the high 80's - that will be a welcome relief. After the Biscuit Fire I told Sam I wanted to live in a cement house with a metal roof in the middle of an irrigated pasture.........so, we did move and where do we live - in one of the highest fire danger areas up on top of a heavily forested hill with deep ravines on each side.

On a positive note - I had a very fun day spinning at the fair today, met lots of nice folks and got quite a bit of spinning done.......although it doesn't look like it on the bobbin since I'm spinning thin.

Roving all finished, ready to sell..........

A couple days ago I got the roving dyed last week all braided, bagged, labeled, priced and photographed for selling - sure makes for a smaller pile once the packaging is done. I love so many of these colors, would love to be able to spin some of each but who has the time!

County fair starts tomorrow - we set up our display Saturday morning, it looks great, I'll get a picture to post. I'll be at the fair every day through Saturday demo'ing spinning. There are a lot of us there, great fun.

Had a start Friday morning, copters with buckets started flying over the house and kept up all day. I couldn't find anything online through forest service sites, through local radio or tv stations on exactly where the fire was until Saturday morning. It could have been a mile down the road or 15 miles down the road. Fire is southwest of us, maybe the 15 miles, growing daily, in steep terrain that's difficult to get to for fire fighting so most of it's being done by air (copters and bomber) with crews on the ground, big dozers, etc haven't been able to get in. 0% containment right now. I'm just hoping it doesn't blow up like the Biscuit Fire did in 2002, we lived out by that one (same area as this one) and it was very scary, over half a million acres burned.

One too many dye days..........

So three dye days in a row is too much for me these days. I bought some great pads to stand on in front of the dye table and roving painting table but it's just not enough......and then there's all the time spent off those pads on the asphalt and concrete, my feet and back are feeling it. I was so glad when I saw there was only 6 pounds of merino/bamboo to dye today. Three days ago I had also planned on dyeing around 100 silk hankies (for spinning) today but last night quickly shelved that idea....will get back to those another time. Temps are going back up to triple digits so dye supplies will be put away until they come back down again.

Learn something new everyday. I put my surgical gloves on getting ready to soak roving in vinegar water when I realized I had forgotten to put on sunblock. What a pain, it would mean taking off the gloves, applying it and then washing the greasy stuff back off my hands which would make getting gloves back on difficult. Then I thought why not apply the lotion with gloves on - no greasy hands - then just pull those greasy gloves off and put new on. Some days I'm brilliant.....other days, not so.......

A new blog

My friend Janette has started up a blog, she's an extremely talented weaver, spinner and seamstress. I hope some of you will find it of interest as she adds to it. I know I'll be checking it because ever since she moved 3 1/2 hours north of here I don't get to see what's she's currently working on, I'm excited to be able to keep up with what's she's creating now.

Another dye day - merino/tencel and glitz.........

Another dye day here, today a much shorter one. I dyed mostly merino/tencel. On the far left rack is a dye day surprise in blues, next to it is the colorway I call Midnight. The center rack has some novelty glitz for adding to fiber as it's run through a drum carder or on hand cards - it's the first time I've dyed any, it took the dye beautifully. On the bottom of that rack is a skein of yarn my friend Patricia asked me to dye to see how Tiffany's (romney sheep) commercially spun fiber turned out. The color is beautiful but I don't know if I'd dye more of it, it's a beautiful oatmeal color on it's own. The far right rack has an experiement in shades of red with blue - someone requested something like that in a different fiber so this was an experiment, then the far right is Purple Sage. So I wonder why that far left drying rack just won't sit right, both sides look the same, can't figure it out.

Tried getting a close up of the novelty glitz but the camera just won't capture the sparkle of it, in the sun it's so beautiful.

Long dye day.........

Lots of dyeing happened here today - 15 pounds of merino/tussah silk, some special ordered, other just for sale. Left rack- Purple Haze, a dye day surprise and Boom's Pink named after my good friend Cathy, aka Boom, who loves pink. Center rack is all dye day surprises, I felt like playing. Right rack is lots of Bering Sea (very popular, sells out each time it's dyed no matter what the fiber) and a dye day surprise with a story.

It was a very strange dye day. It started when I pulled on a pair of surgical gloves only to rip them because I forgot to take my rings off - since my fingers were swollen it was a real feat to the rings off. I needed to mix up more yellow dye, as I mixed it I was thinking it looked a little dark but did that stop me from pouring it in the 1 1/2 gallon container with around a quart of yellow in it.....nooo......I had mixed up golden ochre which I then added to the stock yellow which ruined it which is why that golden dye day surprise is on the drying rack. Then I forgot to put the lid back on the black 1 1/2 gallon of black dye and shook it up - black dye splatters all over me! A glove got a little hole in it, one finger looks gangrene. I forgot to stand back when opening the steamer which gave my face a shot of steam......hmm, wonder if it looks any better.........sure hope tomorrow and Thursdays dyeing is uneventful...........

Fibery weekend

This is what's left from my drop spindle class earlier today, dumped in the studio hallway until tomorrow. Still a big pile to sort and put away but at least I'm minus some student bags with fibers, cd drop spindles and a handout (brown bags on the right). This class was at Middleford Yarn, wonderful yarn shop and nice place to teach. What a great group I had in my class, very fun gals. They were all spinning and plying yarn by the end of the 3 hours, I'm hoping everyone had fun. I realize spindle spinning is not for everyone but I hope some of them continue on. I love enabling others into the fibery goodness lifestyle.......and these gals being knitters and one beginning weaver are pretty much there anyhow, we just went down another avenue.

Yesterday I gave a presentation to a PEO group my friend Paula is a part of. Another nice group of gals - boy, I really met some wonderful people this weekend. None of them are weavers but I think they enjoyed learning about weaving so when they see it in the future they'll understand the process - a few even sat at the loom and threw the shuttle. From what I understand the PEO organization is about celebrating the advancement of women, I think they raise money for scholarships/education for women.

Tomorrow was to be a dye day but I'm not feeling it right now.........besides I haven't weighed out any fiber. So tomorrow I'll spend some time at the scale weighing out roving for dyeing, perhaps Tuesday & Wednesday will be dye days...........

Finally..........

I finally finished spinning and blocking the Ashland Bay merino/tussah in the Concord colorway. I don't sit and spin that often, usually just my spinning get togethers or when demonstrating, like at the fair coming up this month. Out of 8oz of this roving I got 808 yards - it makes for beautiful yarn and is a dream to spin. Next colorway to spin is Lilac. Right now I'm thinking I could use the Concord and Lilac in a weaving project in a shadow weave structure. Not sure what I'll make but since it will be a while before I get the Lilac spun I have lots of time to think.

The weekend started Friday morning by heading up to Salem with my friend Kathy for the annual ANWG meeting (Association of Northwest Weavers Guilds), Kathy is our guild rep. Meeting was Saturday, business in the morning, couple of interesting speakers in the afternoon. I was memorized by Jeanne Carver of the Imperial Stock Ranch in Central Oregon - truly inspiring story about keeping the ranch traditions alive and substainable. Check out their site. They do give tours by appointment, if I'm over in the area I will definitely plan on one.

After the meeting we took a side trip to Sisters for the rest of Saturday and Sunday before heading home last night. We checked out a fellow weaver's Louet Megado Loom - yes, I'm still comptemplating a  compu-dobby loom and since I've seen this one it has moved up to the top of the list over the AVL. I just need to figure out how to fit it in the studio, it's got a bigger footprint. With the what little time we had in Sisters we visited the Stitchin Post Quilt Shop, numerous galleries and the Sisters Summer Faire that had some nice craft booths. And of course, on the way home a stop in Bend at Trader Joe's and then pie at Becky's Cafe in Union Creek, a spot not to be missed if in the Crater Lake or Diamond Lake area.

Now to play catch up around here - busy week with spinning get-together, a guild board meeting, preparing for a presentation here at my studio for a local PEO group and a drop spindle class at Middleford Yarn in Medford......if anyone signed up!

On the loom today..........

Here's what's on the loom new today - another chenille warp for 3 scarves, a graduation...magenta to dark teal to eggplant. First scarf using the dark teal for weft.

Chenille question...........

I had a comment from Textrix asking what I used for the warp in my chenille scarves because she has used tencel and was wondering if chenille could be used. Oh yes, chenille can be used - I used the same chenille for my warp as my weft- it makes for the most luxurious scarves and shawls. I sett the 1300 yds/lb rayon chenille at 16 epi. Sometimes I do mixed warps mixing the chenille with rayon slubs, sometimes variegated in color. With the chenille warp I have also used non-chenille wefts - sometimes tencel, many times rayon and sometimes some great black sparkley rayon I have........that I'm sadly getting low on and have no clue where to pick up more. Originally it was from Silk City Fibers but that was years ago, will have to look at the sample notebooks I've got to see if there's something similar to it.

No weaving today - had lunch with a couple of weaver friends and then headed out for shopping - in and out of the car in the heat has done me in.

More chenille scarves

Here are the lastest of the chenille scarves that came off the loom and were washed yesterday. Fringes still need to be twisted. Yesterday I finally got around to twisting fringes on 6 scarves after finishing the weaving on this black/grey/red warp. Not sure what's going on the loom next - more chenille, or bamboo.

We took the weekend off from the heat, 100+ temps here, just over the mountains on the coast it was in the 60's, sunny and breezy so off we went Friday, back Sunday evening.

I have pounds and pounds of wool sitting here waiting to be dyed, not to mention the latest addition to the stash -120 silk hankies (for spinning). It's just too hot for me, I'd be ok for the first couple hours early in the morning but after that I suffer. Am hoping maybe later this week or next week it will be better.

Chenille scarves

I finally got the 3 chenille scarves washed, still need to twist fringes but will do that when there's a movie I'd like to watch, also have the last 3 bamboo scarves waiting for fringes to be twisted. I did get another chenille scarf warp on the loom - hoping to finish those 3 scarves up this morning, once washed and dried I'll post a picture of them - they're red, black, grey & white.

A lot of weavers ask me how I finish the chenille. To start with when I'm weaving I put a smooth waste yarn in the fringe area to protect it during the washing/drying process. Anyone familiar with chenille knows that the individual threads tend to fall apart if not protected. After the piece comes off the loom I machine stitch across the ends where the waste yarn is. Then I soak it in soapy water, rinse, and put it to soak a bit more with fabric softener. I hang it over a rod to dry, or almost dry. At that point it's as stiff as a board, not the supple drapey chenille we all love. All it takes is 10 minutes on fluff in the dryer (a little heat if not quite dry) and it's as soft as butter. At that point I pull out the waste yarn and twist the fringe - a twisted fringe is a must unless you want to eventually see just threads hanging - another option is a hem.

Some weavers think chenille is out of style and don't use it as much anymore but my sales say otherwise, I sell a ton of chenille scarves and shawls - all it takes is one feel for someone to fall in love with it.

On the needles........redux

Last night I took out the start of this scarf because I wasn't happy with the gold along the beginning edge of it - much happier now. Needles will not be clickety-clacking away at this scarf, have other things I want to work on but when I'm in the mood for knitting I'll pick it up - can't be without a knitting project. Will be a surprise to see how the coloring works out, didn't do anything but tear the roving in half and spin so not sure if there will be lots of striping or more combining of colors - it will be a surprise.

On the needles........

I started this scarf last night, I shouldn't have, I have so many other fiber projects to work on......but there's a need to have something on the needles. This is the Wakefield Scarf pattern from Knitty.com. The yarn is my handspun - roving was hand-dyed by Shelly of Butternut Woolens, merino/silk blend, in the Missouri Breaks colorway. Need to think on it a bit, might be pulling it out tonight and starting over - not sure I like that gold at the beginning edge of the scarf, might be happier if it started with the teal/blue color.

I did get a chenille scarf warp on the loom yesterday and wove the first of three scarves. I need to focus on weaving, the holiday sale season will be here before I know it, summer is flying by as it is........

Kumihimo Fun

Yesterday we took a drive to the coast (90 miles south of new place) so I could teach the Webfoot Weavers in Brookings the art of kumihimo (Sam and cousin Jim golfed while I taught). We started with working on a sample with some thick cotton yarns. Then after an incredibly yummy potluck luncheon they provided I got them started on braiding a keyring using 4 strands of 5/2 perle cotton as one. My example to the right is just one of the many braid combinations they could have tried. I'm hoping they thought it was worthwhile bringing me over. I had fun with the group, what great camaraderie between the members.

I'm hoping to get some dyeing in this week, forecast I saw 2 days ago showed many days in the 80 degree range - perfect! This morning I heard 90's - sure hope not.

Fun package arrived today!

Remember when my friend Kathy made me a felted beaded bling tiara for winning best use of handspun at the nwrsa conference? Well, while at the conference I told the powers to be that a tiara would be much more fun than a plaque. Guess what arrived in the mail today? A sparkley needlefelted tiara. I did my best to get a picture of it complete with little dangley sparkley sheep. Is this fun or what! This does have to be passed on to next year's winner along with the rolled parchment paper proclamation that arrived with it...the good part of that is that I'll keep the one Kathy made for me rather than donate that one to the cause. Oh I should have mentioned that Diane of We Bee Felting made the tiara!

On the fiber front - I finally finished the scarf warp I started last month, got them washed last night, they still need the fringes twisted. These started out to be a two block twill using the variegated bamboo warp. I started to weave and wasn't happy with the results so I switched to plain weave which I rarely do other than when weaving chenille. I like the end result much better. I crossed each scarf with a different color bamboo; black, sage, purple. I've got a chenille scarf warp going on the loom next, I'm running low on scarves and must get weaving.....I've been goofing off lately.

And here's the fair display I've been working on. Jury is still out on how I attached the photos - I used a double stick carpet tape that's supposedly permanent. Well, already one of the pictures fell off. I'm hoping after they sit on the canvas a while they'll stay but I might have to come up with a backup plan in the meantime. All our skeins, handwovens, crocheted or knitted items in the display this year will be the result of one of the 4 colorways we've done in the garden party the past few years.

Table Runners finally done..............

The ten celtic knot table runners are finally finished - they sat around in a pile waiting to be hemmed for quite a while, that finally got done last week, today they were ironed and tagged.

Also today was putting the finishing touches on a new display board for the county fair, had cleanup to do on the pages of photos and text and print them. I'm borrowing a laminating machine tomorrow for all the pictures and text, need to paint the canvas so they have a nice backdrop and then I'm done....will post a picture when finished up. I have an adversion to the paint brush unless it's connected with painting fiber so I'll need to psych myself up for the painting portion.

Today was a day of getting things finished up. I have everything together for the kumihimo class I'm teaching on Saturday. All is ready to go except the handout which I'll get printed tomorrow.

What I've been up to lately........instead of weaving.......

This is what I've been up to lately........we've bought a little beach getaway on the Oregon coast. We're within a short walk to old town with all it's galleries, shops and restaurants and to a cliff overlooking the ocean....probably 8 blocks from actual beach access trail. We spent the weekend there cleaning (wasn't very dirty) and buying all supplies for a friend to replace siding on the south side (had leaked), caulk and paint the entire exterior. Still have some major foundation work to come, hopefully later this month. Only have some beds and a few basics in the kitchen so far but eventually there will certainly be knitting needles, a spinning wheel and if there's room a small loom.

Latest hand-dyed roving for sale............

Pix of recently dyed Falkland Roving - some are already in my etsy shop, others will be up before the week is out. Several colorways sell out shortly after I dye them, two not pictured sold out last week before I could even get them up in the shop. Falkland is a pleasure to spin.

Socks Finished.........

I finally finished this pair of handknit socks out of Opal yarn - I love the colors - very fun. Not much happening here fiber wise, been busy with other things that need attention - starting to get fiber withdrawals, will sit and hem the celtic knot runners this evening....was supposed to do that last week and never got to it.

Another dye day

This is where I do my dyeing - it's in front of the 3 car garage and under the deck so I'm in the shade for everything except the rinsing of the roving. I have the painting table, the dye mixing table, another table for supplies and when I'm also kettle dyeing I have a table for the roaster. Below is my 2 burner propane cooktop with canning pots that I have vegetable steamers sitting inside to hold the rovings up off the bottom of the pot. I also have many 5 gallon buckets and am thinking of getting even more.

Here's the Falkland roving I dyed today. Look at that green - yeehaw! For each of these 3 colorways I dyed a lighter shade to coordinate the main color. On the far right is a small bit of roving I dyed vibrant colors - there's enough to spin and knit up a pair of fingerless mitts, possibly a pair of sox, need to weigh it once it dries and see.

And here are the two sock blanks I dyed - are they crazy or what - they'll make great socks. It's a stockinette stitch blank knit with 2 threads at a time (from Knit Picks). When I start knitting the socks I'll knit both at once and they'll be identical.

 

Dye Day

My mental health therapy since Tuesday has been to fondle fiber. I spent a quiet day weighing out fiber to dye as well as around 25 pounds of Ashland Bay colorways that needed to be weighed, bagged and labeled. Since the weather was lovely today I decided to start dyeing the 22 pounds of Falkland I weighed out - this is around half of it. Of course the day started out with not being able to find any of my 5 gallon buckets - took 45 minutes of digging around the garage and storage areas to find them. These colorways are special orders, although I dye more than what I needed for the orders, these are popular colorways that keep selling out. From the left is Bering Sea, Purple Sage and then on the rack that the wind knocked down is Penelope. I took this picture from the deck because I was way too tired to walk down the stairs again and what do I see but the rack on the ground......I thought about walking down to set it up again but I knew Sam would be home within 15 minutes and he would do it when he saw it! Tomorrow I'll dye the rest of the Falkland - not sure about colors yet, might have to go bright after the subdued colors of today. There's much more to dye but the temps are supposed to head up close to 100 so they may have to wait a bit: Polwarth, BlueFace/Tussah, Merino/Bamboo, Merino/Tencel, Merino/Tussah and Panda which is Superwash Merino/Bamboo/Nylon.
