Vines & Leaves

I did get the loom warped today with a warp for 4 scarves, 8/2 tencel, in the new vines & leaves draft I designed last week. With some tencel left on a bobbin from another project I wove off a half inch more than one repeat so I could get an idea of how it looks. The backside has dark leaves with a light background, just the opposite of what's shown here. Now I'll sleep on it before weaving the scarves in case there's a little tweaking to do. Don't pay attention to my uneven beat, I was concentrating so much on the pattern emerging and looking at floats that I wasn't paying attention to my beat -   this is only a sample in the fringe end of the first scarf, it will be pulled out anyhow after the warp comes off the loom.

Usually changes happen between what wefts I think I'll use and what I end up using but this time I changed the warp from a gold to black so who knows what other changes will come. Am thinking of wefts for the 4 scarves of red, silver, sage and maybe gold or rust.....but that may change when I audition wefts.

  1. This is really pretty! I love vines and leaves.

I've just been looking to find a way to email you but couldn't find an email address. I was wondering if you would mind if I ask you some questions since you're such an experienced weaver and own an AVL....I just found an older AVL 48" weaving width, 16 harness, dobby loom with a fly shuttle, tension box and sectional warp beam for $1800. I pretty sure it's a good price but it's in pieces. Do you think it's risky since it's not together...if anything is missing? Do you think it's a good deal? Also, I wove on one of these years ago and the owner had a pattern book that showed lots of intricate weaving patterns and how to line up the dobby slats for each pattern. The owner of the loom that is for sale hadn't heard of that. Do you know if anything like that would be available somewhere? Or, how would I know what pattern it is going to create or how to change it without a pattern book? Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. :-)

  5. Cindie,
Hi, I have an 8 harness Baby Wolf..is it possible to weave this pattern on it? Did you use a program to help you design it? If so what is the name of it? Could please help me I so want to weave real shapes from nature... sea shells and sea turtles as you did the leaves and vines. Thank you jkrueger1@charter.net

    1. I'm sorry to say that this pattern cannot be woven on an 8 harness loom - I used 40 harnesses. It is one of my original designs. I have a sea shell/sea life draft in the designing stage but it will also use 40 harnesses. You need more than 8 harnesses to get these types of designs unless you do something in pick-up. You can get some fun patterns using boundweave or overshot in rosepath.
