Last night I decided to sit down with the laptop and rework the birch leaves draft I had downloaded from handweaving.net. I took out the crepe weave background and replaced it with a 1/3 twill. It probably took me longer than it should have since I don't know the shortcuts but that's ok, it's all a learning process. I think it looks much better, what do you think?
After I wove a scarf using the new draft I then reworked it again taking out some of the rows of 1/3 twill in-between the leaves. I'm now starting to think about the gingko leaf and dragonfly drafts I'd like to design, I want to do some more playing in the software first though.
ok - this post has left me gasping with shaft envy. Those leaves on the twill background are simply stunning.
ReplyDeleteThat is really cool! I bet it's so fun to weave and see those leaves come together, row by row. Dragonflies are a great idea too!
ReplyDeleteThat is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThis version is much better, I like that we can actually see the birch leaves.
ReplyDeleteWow! I can't do that on four shafts. Just wow.
ReplyDeleteI love this, is the draft available? How many shafts do you need on the loom? Fairly new to weaving, you mention software to help create drafts...what do you use? Thanks for the inspiration and help.
ReplyDeleteLee, this is a 32 shaft draft. I found the original draft on handweaving.net but I changed out the crepe background with a twill background.
DeleteI use two different software programs - for years I've used WeaveIt Pro, very intuitive, my go to for quick work. Then when I bought my 40S AVL I bought Weave Point which is what I used to alter this draft and to power the AVL to weave it - there is more to learn to use this software but it's good.
Wow 32 shafts!! a neighbour gave me a 4 shaft counterbalance loom that has been in his attic for 25 years, I repaired it and have made a rep rug and an overshot creeping vine runner. Toying with whether to get a damask pulley to increase it to eight shafts or to transform the loom into an 8 shaft countermarche. Anyway I m going to see if I can design a draft to produce a crude copy of the birch leaf design using overshot or a modified twill...you've inspired me.
ReplyDeleteI think you could design something fun in overshot or twill, especially rosepath and especially with 8 harnesses. There's a lot that can be done on 4 too. I don't always weave with many harnesses, I often weave on 4 or 8 on my Macombers. Happy weaving!
